"From the Bayou" by Carolyn Benjamin

Ever-cool pebbled porch under

burgeoning feet.

A subtle stench

of sulfur and decay

as receding waters

reveal salty black mud.

Crabbin’ with old chicken bones.

Scoopin’ up minnows.

The croak of alligators

and prayers they surface

on the other side.

Savory steam

of freshly cracked hushpuppies

and shrimp smiling.

Four sisters singing show tunes

and Elvis

and the Beatles.

Clinging as The Outrageous

slices through choppy waters.

Scorching sand

sharing the marvels

that hypnotized Walter Anderson.

Baking sweet buns in the sun.

Suffocating air pacified

by a summer storm

as we sit canopied

by the Captain’s love.

The sunset span

of the Gulf

and home

on the bayou.
